Manchester Metropolitan University has come out top in the ‘Total Reporting’ category at the 2018 Green Gown Awards UK and Ireland.
Established in 2004, the awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities, colleges and the learning and skills sectors across the UK and Ireland.
The ‘Total Reporting’ award recognises the quality and relevance of the University’s publically available reports on sustainability. It specifically highlights the University’s 2016/17 Annual Environmental Sustainability Statement, which outlines the University’s sustainability goals and performance.
In recent years, the University has transformed its approach towards sustainability reporting and the Environment team have worked hard to communicate complex data on the University’s performance and achievements to staff members, students, and the rest of the Higher Education (HE) sector.
On winning this fantastic award, the Green Gown Awards UK and Ireland judges stated: "Manchester Metropolitan outline what their sustainability purpose and strategy is, along with how they will reach their sustainability goals. They also demonstrate a ‘care’ for their stakeholders by reporting on issues raised by different groups.
"What really stands out in this report is how Manchester Metropolitan disclose their performance. Sustainability KPIs are well documented, but presented in a way which can be followed easily by the reader. A worthy winner!"
Vice-Chancellor Professor Malcolm Press said: "We are extremely proud of our sustainability report this year because for the first time it has been prepared in accordance with the GRI Sustainability Standard, it has been externally verified, and it reports our contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals."
The University was also a finalist in the ‘Sustainability Institution of the Year’ category, recognising the University’s commitment to becoming a sustainable organisation.
