You will need to apply for a visa to study at University in Manchester unless one of the following apply:
•you are a British citizen
•you are a citizen of a European Economic Area (EEA) member state or Switzerland
•you have a visa to stay in the UK for another purpose that allows you to study, such as a dependant visa where you are the husband/wife/partner/child of someone in the UK
There are 3 types of visas that may be relevant for studying in Manchester:
Tier 4 (General) Student Visas can be applied for if you have been offered a place on a course, can speak, read, write and understand English, and you have enough money to support yourself and the course, amongst other eligibility requirements. It costs £335 to apply for a visa from outside the UK, and the earliest you can apply is 3 month before the start of your course.
A Short Term Study Visa is available for those wishing to complete a short course in the UK, up to 6 months for any short course if you are 18 or over, or 11 months if you are over 18 and taking an English language course.
Family and friends can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa to visit students whilst they are studying, and can usually stay for up to 6 months. They will need to apply 3 months before they travel at the earlierst, and should have a decision within 3 weeks.
